Waste Management Somerset – Portable Toilets and Septic Tank Emptying

We supplied and maintained portable toilets for a solar farm development in Molland back in 2016. These were on long term hire from A Plant, additionally we serviced their septic tank. Toilets were required for the ground man working there.

Hinkley Point – 2016 to present

We also supply a range of services for EDF Energy at Hinkley Point and have done since 2016. We are well placed from our yard at TA9 4EX. Burnham Portable Toilet Hire can take an hour for our large lorries to travel from from Burnham-on-Sea area, the roads during the day can become congested. Fun fact: Our BPTH world record is just under an hour just past the 55 minute mark 😉

From our head office, the lorry heads north up the A38, then onto the A39 westbound through Bridgwater. Still on the A39 towards Cannington, then it’s a quick run using the designated HGV route to Hinkley Point. Our route is approximately 20-25 miles from waste door to nuclear door.

Trusted Nuclear Supplier – What safety checks are normal for every visit?

This is one of our favourite questions! Some days we can have 4 deliveries for days of on-0site heavy staff volumes, regardless, the checks at the welcome gate always consist of the following:

ID Check: Hope you brought every form of identification since your birth certificate. They might even ask for a letter from your first grade teacher vouching for your character.
Vehicle Inspection: Prepare for your lorry to be examined more thoroughly than a suspect mole at a dermatologist’s office. Undercarriage checks, mirrors, the works.
Paperwork Scrutiny: Every “i” must be dotted, every “t” crossed. If you’ve made the grave error of using blue ink instead of black, may the nuclear gods have mercy on your soul.
Cargo Verification: What’s in the lorry? Why is it going to the facility? Are you absolutely certain that’s not a cleverly disguised doomsday device?
Security Questionnaire: Expect to be asked everything from your mother’s maiden name to what you had for breakfast three Tuesdays ago.
Human health: This one is often a surprise – Our drivers have regular medical checks too to make sure their heart is up the job.
Metal Detectors and X-ray Scans: Because nothing says “welcome” like being treated as a potential security threat.
Radiation Screening: In case you’ve been moonlighting as a uranium smuggler in your spare time.

Also, having had an EDF free tour pre-pandemic, I learned that each indoor and close-to-the-reactor staff member carries a Geiger counter in their top breast pocket. This is scanned at entry and exit from their designated area for abnormal readings, multiple times a day during their shift.
